Artist Biography
Jim Slack (1947-2001) was an artist’s artist. Among his fans and buyers are artists and teachers from all over the world, because he pushed the boundaries of what can be done with paint and canvas. He painted like he lived - fast and furious, and without consideration for other people’s opinions. Fear of death or dismemberment never stopped him from experiencing the fullness of life (he did lose a leg along the way and died of life excesses). And criticism did not stop him from painting what others considered inappropriate. Jim’s paintings were in series, with names such as "Raw Irish," "Flying Boy," "Big Yellow Heads," and "The Icons." His final series was "The Broken Heart Series." Biographically - Jim began showing in New York when he was 18, and only during a brief hiatus in Vietnam, continued showing until his death. He was active in the Detroit area art movement, co-founding ACT (a gallery for emerging artists) and Art Ambience (a visual show for artists). He also co-founded River’s Edge Gallery with his wife Patt, and was on the board of The Michigan Gallery, Focus Gallery, and the Michigan Very Special Arts. Recognition came during his lifetime from many collectors - both private and corporate, and Jim was an award winning artist at the local, regional, and national level. The Downriver Council for the Arts gave him the Award of Excellence, which is the highest award given for community involvement in the arts. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and served as an artist in residence at Wayne County Community College. And though Jim died on May 9, 2001 the age of 53, a few days short of his 54th birthday on May 18. River’s Edge is proud to have Jim’s work on display and to have his spirit guide us everyday in all the work we do.
