Nora Chapa Mendoza

Artist Biography
In November, 1999, Nora Mendoza was named "Michigan Artist of the Year", and recipient of the Governor's Arts Award. She studied at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, and for the past 30 years, her full time work of painting has taken on a fierce spirit of individualism and she has become well known for the forms hidden within her abstract paintings. Her full expression as an artist has expanded to include restoration, workshops, artist in residence, and murals, the latter currently being her favorite area of growth. In 1996, she was one of eight artists who participated in the 6 million renovation project to renovate and bring Detroit's Music Hall back to its original beauty of 1928. Ms. Mendoza has been recognized with numerous awards over the past 20, years. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is represented among many important collections around the world. Among her collectors are such notables as Detroit's Mayor Dennis Archer, singer Aretha Franklin, actor Edward James Olmos, and the former president of General Motors Mr. Jack Smith. Corporate collectors include the Ford offices in Rockefeller Plaza (New York, New York), Edison Plaza (Detroit, Michigan), General Motors offices (Detroit, Michigan), and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan (Detroit, Michigan). Nora Mendoza devotes much of her time to enriching the local and international communities by sharing her work, her experience, and passing on her skills to a future generation of artists.
