Artist Biography
Nancy Pitel's art career spans over 30 years starting with a piece commissioned for an attorney's office when she was just twelve. She is one of those artists who can do anything called for including portraits, multi-media works, oil paintings, wall murals, book illustrations and all graphic arts including developing logos and ads. She is the former Executive Director and Executive Board Member of the prestigious Scarab Club of Detroit. Pitel has been the manager of Wayne Eagle Graphics and of the advertising composition department at Associated Newspapers as well as the advertising layout artist for the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers.
Pitel has exhibited in numerous gallerys and has won countless awards. For the Detroit's Gem Theatre Invitational her piece, "Parting the Veils", is now traveling the country as part of Menopause the Musical's accompanying art exhibit.
The June 2005 STRUT Magazine featured her portrait, "Mika's Freedom", on the cover with a featured story about the creation of the painting.
Pitel's new work includes the folk art technique of wood burning which she learned as a child from Johanna Spargo who was taught by a world renown wood burner while in a concentration camp. Nancy still has that wood burner built to help occupy the children's time who were incarcerated.
The process uses a hot electrical wire to burn images into a panel of wood than Nancy applies acrylic paint to give the image a texture and depth that can been seen and touched.
Artist Statement
"I believe art is for everyone - one doesn't need understand the nuances to enjoy it. If the art is good, it will bring about remembered feelings and thoughts; if the art is great it will create new feelings and encourage new thinking that the viewer has never experienced before."
